A few days ago 56 Iowa counties have been declared a major disaster area by the federal government. Though this means federal assistance, it doesn't mean the lives of those affected will get back to normal anytime soon.
This is why organizations like the United Way plays an essential role in these communities, to support financially the nonprofits and organizations on the ground that are making direct positive impact.
I've made phone calls to Siouxland (Sioux City area) and Midlands (Council Bluffs / Omaha area) asking what specific needs they have, and I'm waiting to hear back. It sounds like we'll discuss tomorrow.
